Complete inspection data directs efficient planning and operations
Without a thorough and accurate assessment that provides quality data, successfully undertaking a major pipe infrastructure project can be difficult and possibly hazardous. Determining pipe conditions is also essential for prioritizing project requirements and sound budgetary planning.
National Underground Group’s pipe assessment services provide the most advanced inspection imaging available using several key technologies:
- Panoramo 360-degree inspection records 100% of pipe interior with precise digital clarity that can be viewed from any angle, enabling accurate measurements using a data-embedded virtual 3D reader
- LiDAR profiling uses light detection and ranging (LiDAR) to provide accurate data for proactive repair and replacement of 6- to 60-inch diameter pipe
- Laser profiling performs inspections using a laser light projected in the form of a ring inside the pipe, creating a digital profile of the pipe as the system’s camera moves through the line
- Sonar profiling emits sound pulses and reflection measurements to provide visual inspection data on pipe deformation, silt and grease accumulation, and offsets and blockages in partially and fully submerged pipes while they are in service
CCTV with sewer lateral inspections provide TV images of mainline and lateral pipe interiors
Sewer lateral inspections are paramount when directional drilling is scheduled for the installation of utility lines, and where past drilled utilities (gas or telecommunication) may have penetrated the lateral. Not locating sewer laterals in advance creates a risk of utility lines being installed through existing wastewater infrastructure.
National Underground Group’s lateral launch sewer inspection provides assessment of all pipe types, including mainline and lateral pipes through closed-circuit television (CCTV) images. Mobility is provided by self-steering robotic crawlers, all-terrain crawlers and track-mounted systems. A CCTV camera is launched from the robotic transporter through the mainline and up the lateral, extending up to 100 feet.
During the process, every inch of the infrastructure network, from the mainline through the length of a lateral, is inspected for dangerous gas utility line cross bores, pipe degradation and structural issues.
Manhole assessments ensure comprehensive wastewater infrastructure inspection
Manholes are the most accessible points of a sewer system. Manhole inspections should be considered a vital aspect of any wastewater infrastructure inspection or maintenance program. Traditional methods of accessing and inspecting manholes and underground vaults, or confined space entry, can involve a significant amount of time and risk. As a provider of 3D manhole scanning, National Underground Group offers a safe and cost-effective alternative.
A scanning device is lowered into the manhole or vault on a telescoping pole system or cable. As the scanner is deployed, it periodically makes 360-degree scans, which are later processed to create a 3D point cloud of the interior. Scans can be produced in color or black and white. The process captures high-resolution details from every inch of the manhole wall, enabling a more accurate and comprehensive manhole cover assessment. The data collected, often referred to as point clouds, can be used by CAD technicians to create accurate maps of spaces, making it easier to see materials, shapes, density and the size of physical objects in subsurface spaces.
National Underground Group’s manhole 3D scanning system offers several important benefits:
- Eliminates worker risks associated with hazardous conditions, falls and other subsurface injuries
- Conducts fully automated scans that are completed within minutes, by just one operator
- Uses 3D laser scanning to provide complete and accurate data while reducing human error
- Reduces issues associated with change orders and delay costs
- Streamlines documentation through seamless integration with existing software
- Enhances communication for improved project coordination and collaboration
