Utility locating services proven to provide damage prevention

National Underground Group’s GPR and private utility locating services provide civil engineers, general contractors, forensic units and other underground infrastructure stakeholders with the identification and position of existing subsurface utilities. This service is essential as a guard against damaging utilities caused by digging, trenching or conducting site assessments for new utility installations.

GPR and private utility locating services employ a nondestructive, geophysical technology that uses radar pulses to image the subsurface and buried objects. It can quickly detect utilities, changes in material properties, voids and cracks. GPR can also be used to locate drain fields, underground storage tanks (UST) and non-metallic utilities (e.g., A/C, PVC water mains, terracotta pipelines).

Our locating services offers several key benefits:

  • Locating accuracy guards against excavation-related damage to existing utilities
  • Cost-effective for projects requiring quick completion
  • Excellent method for large sites or sensitive areas
  • Can be used in forensic investigations

Expanding the scope of locating subsurface utilities beyond public company requirements

Our private locating serves owners of private utilities. This is necessary because public utility companies only locate the facilities they own. An example of their limited responsibility is to only locate and mark a utility from the main to the meter. From the meter to the building (house, office, etc.), the utility is privately owned. It is up to the property owner to locate and mark the utility.

National Underground Group provides service in four quality level designations according to Cl/ ASCE 38-02:

  • Level D: Contacting utility owners/ records and verbal recollection research/ data collection
  • Level C: Visual site survey to confirm all above-ground features/ findings added to Level D records
  • Level B: Line confirmation using electromagnetic devices and marking with color-coded paint
  • Level A: Identifying precise horizontal/ vertical locations at specific points by digging test holes
Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) & Private Utility Locating

Excavating test holes to determine the exact horizontal and vertical location of existing utilities is a crucial step to final design and early construction phases provide a number of advantages

  • Test holes determine exact horizontal and vertical location of existing utilities
  • Non-destructive, vacuum excavation identifies all points vulnerable to utility conflict
  • Field staking exact locations of proposed features and possible utility conflicts
  • Restoration of test holes and marking locations, utilizing established utility designating color codes and ASCE Standards of Practice
  • Formal test hole report and inventory for all structures identified
  • Total station survey of test hole locations enables CADD mapping
